Northeast Civil Platform

Our Mission

Northeast Civil Platform(NEC)'s mission is to act as an advisory council serving as a communication and coordination resource for the Hizmet volunteers and institutions in the Northeast region of the United States.

What We Do

  • We offer educational opportunities to our network for increasing professionalism in the areas of leadership, governance, and public relations.

  • We regularly assess the governance, transparency, and accountability of our network of organizations to improve their performance and efficiency.

  • We support our community by developing best practice sharing and cooperation opportunities.

  • We serve as a communication hub among the Hizmet volunteers in the North East and the United States.

Our Approach

  • Our council convenes bi-monthly.

  • Attendees of the bi-monthly meetings include: executive directors, representative board members, and volunteers of local Hizmet-related institutions as well as coordinators of Hizmet functions, such as dialog, mentorship, and humanitarian relief.

  • In its meetings, NCP aims to ensure attendance by two thirds (2/3) majority with no financial or family interests with Hizmet-related institutions.

  • Each member institution or local Hizmet community is governed by their respective Board of Governors in accordance with the federal and state laws, and their by-laws. It is understood by all participants that decisions in NCP’s meetings are at the advisory status and not binding.

  • We elect four members to represent us along with the Chairman of the NCP in the US Hizmet Platform. Again, our relationships with other platforms and institutions are non-binding.

  • To increase cooperation and experience sharing, we have established the following committees:

  • Education and Mentoring Committee

  • Executive Committee

  • Governance, Compliance, and Accountability Education and Training Committee

  • Human Resources Committee

  • Finance Committee

  • Communications and PR Committee

  • These committees consist of members and non-members of the NCP and experts.

  • We regularly invite experts to receive advice or representatives from other institutions such as Alliance for Shared Values and Embrace Relief, to seek collaboration opportunities.

  • Our platform members represent local Hizmet Platforms in the following regions:

  • New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Connecticut, Upstate New York, New York, New Jersey, South Jersey and East Pennsylvania, Western Pennsylvania.

What is Hizmet?

Hizmet is a transnational civil society initiative that advocates for the ideals of human rights, equal opportunity, democracy, non-violence and the emphatic acceptance of religious and cultural diversity. Led by Fethullah Gulen, Hizmet began in Turkey as a grassroots movement in the 1970s in the context of social challenges being faced at the time: violent conflict among ideologically and politically driven youth, desperate economic conditions and decades of the state-imposed ideology of discrimination. Throughout the past five decades, Hizmet's activism has focused on:

  • Promoting philanthropy and community service

  • Investing in education to seek long-term peace and social development

  • Intercultural and interfaith dialogue for peaceful coexistence
